In situations where you are over-clocking your EVGA video card, it's important to ensure that your fan speed settings are applied. Everyone knows that with EVGA Precision, you can manually set your fan settings and choose to launch the program with windows startup.
This is great, however in Windows Vista and Windows 7, EVGA Precision will throw a UAC prompt asking permission to run the software every time you boot up your system. This is inconvenient, so I thought I'd write up a tip on how to run the EVGA Precision utility without using the "Start up with Windows" feature within it's options.
**Note, it is very important that after you've followed this guide you do NOT have the "Start up with Windows" check box selected within the EVGA Precision software - otherwise, it will launch a second instance of the software and continue to throw a UAC Prompt.
This will work with any other applications you would like to run as well, however you will have to use your own logic to figure out the target paths, launch switches etc.
So assuming you have EVGA Precision installed on your system, and you've dialed in your settings, follow this series of steps:
- In the EVGA Precision software squite, select the checkbox that enables the software to launch minimized when executed.
- MAKE SURE the "Start with windows" checkbox is NOT selected
- Start the Task Scheduler Service (Start > Run > taskschd.msc)
- Create a task, and name it EVGA Precision.
- Put a check in the checkbox labeled “Run with highest Privileges”.
- Click the Actions tab and create a new action. Select “Start a program” from the drop down list.
- Under Program/script, browse for EVGA Precision utility and click open.
- Once you see the program path/executable under the “Program/Script” textbox, click OK.
- Click OK on the “Create a task” window.
- You should see the new task in the Task Scheduler. Verify that it’s there, and click OK to close out of the window.
- On your desktop, create a new shortcut and under location type: schtasks /run /tn "EVGA Precision" and click next.
- Name the shortcut and click Finish.
- For bonus points, right click on the shortcut you just made – click the shortcut tab and click “Change Icon”. Click OK to the error message that pops up and then click the browse button on the “Change Icon” window that displays. Navigate to the directory where EVGA precision is installed and double click on the precision executable. It will then provide you with the icon for the utility. Click OK and then OK again.
- Click Start > All Programs and Right Click on “Startup” and choose “Explore all users”.
- Cut and Paste your shortcut into this directory.
You’re all finished. This is extremely helpful when you're pushing high frequencies on those GTX200 and GTX400 series cards. Let me know how it works for you guys!
